BINTA DIAW X CONTEMPORALIS
CONTEMPORALIS had the pleasure of hosting works by the Italian-Senegalese artist Binta Diaw from February to April 2024. The exhibition opened on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, in the presence of the artist and her gallery, Galerie Cécile Fakhoury.
Often taking the form of installations and site-specific projects that sometimes assume monumental dimensions, Binta Diaw’s visual research emerges at the intersection of philosophical and historical reflections on the social phenomena that define our contemporary world, such as migration, the notion of belonging, the relationship with history and its archives, and questions of gender. Drawing on her diasporic and fluid identity, Binta Diaw challenges dominant perspectives of history in order to reintroduce, with remarkable economy of means, a plurality of narratives. In doing so, the artist proposes a decentering of an exclusively Eurocentric vision of history.
Binta Diaw is a Senegalese-Italian artist born in 1995 in Milan, Italy, where she currently lives and works. She graduated from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan and from the École d’Art et de Design de Grenoble in France. In 2022, Binta Diaw was the first recipient of the Franco-Italian Pujade-Lauraine Prize.
